Dressed in a bright yellow dress, Kwan performed her free skate to a Spanish piece called ''Aranjuez,'' which scored well with the judges. She earned three 5.8s for artistry from the panel of five international judges.

Kwan's 2002 Olympic teammates, Sasha Cohen and Sarah Hughes, joined her at the competition that was held October 6, 2002, in Daytona Beach, FL.

Hughes, who unveiled a two-week old program, finished third and Cohen finished fourth. Hughes stepped out of a triple flip. Cohen, who also finished fourth at the 2002 Olympics, fell on a triple lutz and did not complete any jump combinations. The judge's final results are posted on the USFSA's website.

Ann Patrice-McDonough, who completed a near-flawless program, finished second. This was her first major senior-level event. McDonough was the 2002 World Junior Champion and 2000 U.S. Junior Champion.

Although she doubled a few jumps and didn't complete the second part of a triple lutz-double toe combination, Kwan delivered a strong performance. Kwan has not ruled out competing at nationals later this season, and she is still leaving her options open to compete in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.
